MaryAnne Golon

MaryAnne Golon is a professor of practice at Syracuse University in the Visual Communication department of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication. She is a former director of photography at The Washington Post. She was a key member of the senior newsroom management team overseeing all aspects of photography for The Post across all surfaces.

MaryAnne managed 17 staff photojournalists, 25 photography editors, and her team assigned scores of freelance photojournalists worldwide. During her tenure, The Post won a Pulitzer Prize for photography and several other Pulitzers that named the photo staff.

MaryAnne was also Time magazine’s director of photography and co-managed the international newsmagazine’s photography department for more than 15 years. She has received numerous individual and team picture-editing awards from POYi (Pictures of the Year International) and NPPA’s (National Press Photographer’s Association) Best of Photojournalism competitions. Communication Arts, Society of News Design and Society of Publication Designers, American Society of News Editors, and American Photography have all recognized her work. She was 2013 Picture Editor of the Year at the Lucie Awards.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Communications from the University of Florida and is a distinguished alumna. MaryAnne completed a fellowship in Public Policy and Media Studies at Duke University.
