Steven G. Smith
Steven G. Smith is a cinematographer and photographer specializing in documentary film and journalism, with a focus on social and environmental issues. He is a passionate storyteller who believes in giving a voice to his subjects and engaging with the community. Smith’s award-winning films and cinematography have been featured in film festivals worldwide.
Smith’s notable accolades include winning the Pulitzer Prize as part of a team project and earning eleven awards from prestigious organizations such as Pictures of the Year, the European Cinematography Awards, the Athens International Art Film Festival, the Tokyo Shorts Film Festival and the Mannheim Arts and Film Festival.
In addition to his film work, Smith is the author of Under the Dark Sky, Life in the Thames River Basin, published in 2018 by Wesleyan University Press. This photo essay book presents a vivid portrait of a region extending from southern Massachusetts through Connecticut to the Long Island Sound, sometimes referred to as “the Last Green Valley” or “the Quiet Corner.” The region was designated a Natural Heritage Corridor in 1994 due to its unique and extensive forests, making it one of the last remaining stretches of green in southern New England.
Through his work, Steven G. Smith strives to create a more just and sustainable world, using his skills as a compassionate storyteller to connect with audiences and inspire positive change.
Steve currently teaches visual storytelling at the University of Connecticut.
